Determination of fertility parameters in different sized dairy farms
Journal Title: Antakya Veteriner Bilimleri Dergisi (The Journal of Antakya Veterinary Sciences) - Year 2022, Vol 1, Issue 1
Abstract
The present study was conducted to determine the fertility parameters of animals in different sizes of dairy cattle farms. The study was carried out by following the fertility records of 183 head heifers and cows aged between 1-10 years in 5 dairy cattle farms (A, B, C, D, E) that are members of the Osmaniye Cattle Breeders' Association. The numbers of animals in the enterprises were respectively 14, 30, 38, 45, and 56. The first observed heat age (FOHA), the first artificial insemination age (FAIA), the first calving age (FCA), service period (SP), calving interval (CI), the number of insemination per pregnancy (NIPP), first heat after calving (FHAC), first insemination after calving (FIAC), pregnancy rate to first insemination (PRFI), pregnancy rate (PR) and the period of gestation (PG) were evaluated regarding the fertility characteristics. The values of the FOHA (month), FAIA, FCA, and PG in pregnant heifers are recorded as 9.67, 505.4, 782.8 and 277.2, 9, 550.5, 837.0 and 277.7, 8.8, 525.2, 806.9 and 277.0, 10.8, 587.7, 870.6 and 275.6, 12.1, 615.3, 906.6 and 276.5 days respectively in A, B, C, D and E farms. The values of FAIA (day) and FOHA (month) in non-pregnant heifers were determined as 541.8 and 10.20 (B), 512.7 and 10.2 (C), 562.5 and 10.9 (D), 568.5 and 12.2 (E), respectively. The values of the PG, FHAC, and FIAC in pregnant cows in those farms are calculated respectively as follows: 274.3, 59.9, and 82.6, 278.8, 45.4 and 60.3, 275.5, 26.1 and 94.3, 278.8, 47.5 and 88.3, 276.7, 64.8 and 86.0 days. The variation in the values of the PG, FHAC, and FIAC in pregnant cows among the farms is considered significant. The values of the FHAC and FIAC in non–pregnant cows in farms B, C, D, and E are measured as 40.00 and 62.8, 33.3 and 85.6, 52.0 and 84.2, 68.2 and 91.1 days, respectively. No variation is observed in the values of the FHAC and FIAC among those farms. The highest number of insemination per each pregnancy is determined in farm E (1.8) and the lowest rate is determined in D (1.2). The average rate of getting pregnant at the first insemination in cows and heifers is 44.6 and 74.5 in total. As a result, there are no significant deviations in the fertility measures in general among the farms where the study was conducted and it is considered that the fertility parameters in the farms examined in the Osmaniye region are acceptable in the region and country conditions.
