Determination of Temperature and Humidity Interactions of Gas Sensors Used in Air Quality Monitoring

Journal Title: ÇOMÜ Ziraat Fakültesi Dergisi - Year 2018, Vol 6, Issue 1

Abstract

Metal oxide semiconductor gas sensors are used extensively in different application areas and industries. These sensors, which are relatively inexpensive, robust, lightweight, long lasting and fast response times compared to other sensors, are frequently used in academic studies and commercial devices related to air quality measurement. The semiconductor active element undergoes oxidation when exposed to any gas and causes a difference in resistance of the sensor. This resistance variation varies with the gas concentration. But often the change in resistance is not explained only by the presence or quantity of the gas. The temperature and relative humidity of the medium under measurement also affect sensor performance. Direct use of sensor data in intelligent systems developed in this context may result in erroneous results. The use of compensation circuits to achieve stable results will positively affect system performance. In this study, the performance of methane (CH4), hydrogen (H), ammonia (NH3), hydrogen sulphide (H2S), volatile organic compounds (VOC) and general purpose air quality control sensors at different temperatures and relative humidity were evaluated. It is statistically shown that both parameters affect the sensor data. However, it is observed that the effect of temperature is higher. Compensation curves have been developed for such sensors.
