DETERMINING GAS CONCENTRATION IN GROUNDWATER IN STATIC CONDITIONS

Abstract
The article discusses theoretical basis for determining gas concentrations in groundwater by measuring gas parameters in a well at head level. The measurements, performed in static conditions, apply to gas-rich groundwaters. The adopted static conditions refer to the state when water is not discharged from the well and the positions of water table in the well and the aquifer do not change in time. The described calculation method also enables determination of bubblepoint pressure, gas/water ratio and the depth of water table in the well.In order to verify the method, the author performed calculations for two wells drawing gas-rich groundwaters. One of them drew waters containing only one dissolved gas – carbon dioxide. In the other one, water contained three dissolved gasses: methane, nitrogen and carbon dioxide. The results obtained for static conditions are comparable to those representing dynamic conditions, i.e. when gas composition of groundwater is established by conducting analyses in the conditions of water-gas mixture flowing out of the well.
