Determining the hydraulic conductivity of layered anisotropic media

Journal Title: Biuletyn Państwowego Instytutu Geologicznego - Year 2008, Vol 431, Issue 431

Abstract

The article presents a formula expressing the value of equivalent hydraulic conductivity for any possible flow direction in a layered medium. It also presents an expression for calculating the angle between the direction of hydraulic gradient (gradH) and the direction of filtration velocity v. This difference in directions should be also taken into account when investigating hydraulic conductivity in permeameters. However, it is often practically impossible as the gradH direction in permeameters is usually close to the direction of filtration velocity v. When the flow direction is oblique to layering (it is different from the main directions of permeability tensor), it causes errors in determining equivalent hydraulic conductivity. The article estimates the size of these errors. With this aim, theoretical calculations, allowing for the difference in gradH and v directions, were compared with numerical flow calculations appropriate for permeameter test conditions. They lead to practical conclusions concerning the determination of the hydraulic conductivity ellipse for anisotropic media.
