DETERMINING THE IMPACT OF ADMINISTRATION OF JATROPA GOSSIPIIFOLIA ON THE CYTOARCHITECTURE OF THE TESTES OF TREATED MALE WISTAR RATS

Journal Title: World Journal of Pharmaceutical and Medical Research - Year 2017, Vol 3, Issue 4

Abstract

This study was aimed at investigating the impact of administration of Jatropa gossipiifolia on the cytoarchitecture of the testes of treated male Wistar rats. 1.3kg of the leaves of Jatropa gossipiifolia were washed and air dry and macerated in 50% ethanol. Forty male adult albino Wistar rats were used, the animals were randormly divided into 4 groups which were administered with 5ml of distilled water (control), 86.58mg/kg (group 2), 175.21mg/kg (group 3) and 250.81mg/kg of the extract respectively for 28days. After the last dose schedule, the animals were sacrificed and the testes removed for histopathological examination. Results from this study reveals degeneration of connective tissue, mild interstitial cell edema and mild to scanty germinal epithelia population in animals administered with 86.561mg/kg of jatropa gossipiifolia. Similarly, degeneration of connective tissue, interstitial cell necrosis and severe to scanty germinal epithelia population was observed in animals administered with 175.21mg/kg of Jatropa gossipiifolia. Connective tissue degeneration, interstitial cell infiltration and necrosis, intraparenchymal hemorrhage and severe germinal epithelial erosion was evident in animals administered with 250.81mg/kg of Jatropa gossipiifolia. It can therefore be concluded that Jatropa gossipiifolia has a devastating effect on the cytoarchitecture as well as the reproductive parameters of the testes.
