DETERMINING THE USAGE PURPOSES OF UNIVERSITY CAMPUS OPEN SPACES BY YOUTH

Abstract
University campuses are defined as complexes which contain various functions within itself. A campus is more than an isolate site with buildings. It can be identified with its environment planned for educational process and open spaces. Campus open spaces are important for its users, especially for youth (students) who spends most of their time in campus site. Campus open spaces are defined according to user needs. Therefore, determining spatial usage patterns of youth who are the users of campus site is essential. This study was conducted in Karadeniz Technical University, Kanuni Campus. The study consists of two phases. In the first phase survey of the study area was done, the buildings inside the site were categorized and general structure of campus was determined. Afterwards open spaces in the study area were categorized in order to determine where the spaces used by youth are located in study area. In the second phase a questionnaire was conducted with 120 students from different departments in order to determine how they use campus open spaces. The study revealed that the courtyards around the buildings and the common recreational areas were mostly used by youth.
