DEVELOPMENT OF AN ECONOMIC TENSILE AND TORSION TESTING MACHINE FOR WIRES

Journal Title: Open Journal of Mechanical Engineering (OJME) - Year 2016, Vol 1, Issue 1

Abstract

The tensile and torsion properties of materials are extremely important in the design, analysis and manufacture of a wide variety of products and components which are loaded primarily in tensile and torsion loads. A bulky tension and torsion testing machines are available separately for testing specimens of moderate diameters. However, machines to determine tension and tensional properties of thin wires are not available especially in combined mode. In this context an effort is made to develop a small handy tensile-torsion testing machine especially for thin wires is not easy for students to understand and evaluate the tensile and torsion properties of materials. This machine is capable of determining the tensile (pulling) load and shear properties of materials according to the ASTM specifications. The machine provides the broad understanding of the internal mechanism, tension load cell, torque load cell and rotational potentiometer which are equipped with this machine. After the development of the machine, experiments are conducted for different material samples of thin wires. The results show that the Young’s modulus and rigidity modulus values are almost matching with the standard ones. The machine provides a low cost solution for engineering technology programs that wish to expand their material testing capabilities.
