Development of teachers’ cross-cultural literacy in the system of further vocational education

Journal Title: Religación. Revista de Ciencias Sociales y Humanidades - Year 2019, Vol 4, Issue 14

Abstract

General trends of contemporary education include the desire to integrate and universalize social relations. This process leads to the intensification of intercultural interaction between representatives of different cultural communities. The expansion of intercultural contacts in the modern world emphasizes the importance of achieving mutual understanding between people of different cultures. Education is not able to overcome the problems facing society, but it could make significant contribution to the harmonization of multicultural relations by developing and modernizing technologies and forms of students’ intercultural competences. Education can also promote the development of tolerance and respect for the cultural diversity of society among the participants in educational process. It can help learners to understand own culture and the culture of other nations, to acquire skills of critical evaluation and understanding  both individual and cultural diversity in general. Being the most important part of culture, education is designed to ensure the entry of a person into a culture through the national values of his/her people. Like culture, education should not be limited by the framework of national cultural values; it should create conditions not only for enriching a person with human values, but also for understanding the significance of diversity. Multicultural education should become an inseparable part of general education, including further vocational education, since interpersonal relations take place in a multi-ethnic, multicultural environment. Each person learns, works, rests in a multicultural society, so he/she forms the need for communication skills between representatives of different cultural communities, and, as a result, the formation of cross-cultural literacy of  individual.
