Differences in the corrosion resistance of selected metal alloys used in dental prosthetics

Journal Title: Prosthodontics - Year 2016, Vol 66, Issue 3

Abstract

Introduction. Alloys are the basic materials used in producing prosthetic replacements. All of them must meet specific physicochemical requirements. Examinations performed by manufacturers do not include an analysis of oral cavity conditions. The effect of various chemicals on the casted alloy surface plays a significant role as well. Dental alloy specifications do not contain parameters of the corrosion process that exerts its negative impact on the patient’s oral cavity and the entire body.Aim of the study. To compare the corrosion resistance of various metal alloys after their casting and to assess the effects of prosthetic disinfectants on corrosion.Materials and methods. Four non-precious metal alloys (cobalt-based) were used in the study: Biosil F (DeguDent), Remanium GM 800+ (Dentaurum), Remanium Star (Dentaurum), Wironit Extrahart (BEGO). Before the examination the alloys were casted once. One sample of each alloy was reserved for metallographic and micro-scopic examinations. Electrochemical examinations of corrosion were performed in the solution simulating the oral cavity conditions according to the PN-EN ISO 17475 standard. In addition, a group of samples was exposed to the solution used for prosthetic disinfection. Results and conclusions. Chemical composition, cast microstructure, technique and parameters of the casting process, as well as the methods of surface treatment exert a significant impact on corrosion resistance. The latter determines the biocompatibility of alloys. An advantageous impact of the disinfectant was observed.
