DIFFERENT TEACHING AIDS AND PERCEPTION OF UNDER GRADUATE MEDICAL STUDENTS IN A TERTIARY CARE TEACHING INSTITUTION
Journal Title: Journal of Evolution of Medical and Dental Sciences - Year 2019, Vol 8, Issue 13
Abstract
BACKGROUND In this age of technology, the teaching-learning process is dependent on various teaching aids available in the classroom. Medical education is no exception. Feedback of students is vital in this regard. This study was done to assess the perception of 9th semester under graduate medical students regarding three different teaching aids (i.e. chalk & blackboard, overhead projector and power point presentation) during gynaecology lecture. METHODS The cross-sectional study was conducted in 2018 among undergraduate medical students of 9th semester, at the department of obstetrics & gynaecology in Calcutta National Medical College, Kolkata, West Bengal, India to evaluate the opinions regarding three teaching aids (black board, overhead projector and power point presentation) used during gynaecology lectures. Students’ feedback was collected by administering pre-structured forced choice questionnaire after completion of fifteen classes with the three teaching aids. RESULTS Among the 143 respondent students, most of them preferred chalk and blackboard for better interaction between students & teacher (86.71%), better for taking notes during lecture (53.84%) and better for recall (72.02%) than other two teaching aids. They preferred power point presentation for better demonstration of clinical conditions (55.24%) & found it to be better for stress free listening (65.03%) than the other two teaching aids. Both chalk & blackboard and power point presentation were found to be almost equally effective for understanding and grasping content. Overhead projector was found to be most sleep inducing (64.33%) by the respondent students among all three teaching aids. CONCLUSIONS Chalk & black board is still the preferred teaching aid for students for overall understanding, grasping the content. But power point presentation is more effective for better listening and understanding clinical conditions. The role of overhead projector as teaching aid has reduced. So, using both chalk & black board and power point presentation during a lecture can be the best for medical students
