Disposable Chemo Sensor for Quantitative Determination and Removal of Selenium
Journal Title: International Journal of Research in Chemistry and Environment (IJRCE) - Year 2012, Vol 2, Issue 2
Abstract
MATLAB assisted disposable chemo sensor (paptode) is proposed for determination of selenium (IV).The sensor is constructed by immobilizing new reagents hydroxyl amine hydrochloride, sulfanilic acid and N-1- naphthyl- ethylenediamine dihydrochloride (NEDA) on Whatman filter paper. This method is based on oxidation of hydroxylamine hydrochloride with selenite ions to nitrous acid, which in turn diazotizes sulfanilic acid which subsequently couples with NEDA to form magenta colored spot followed by scanner based detection. Changes in RGB values of colored spots on Whatman paper strips create a pattern. The obtained pattern was analyzed using image processing tool of MATLAB software to determine and remove selenium. The proposed sensor was linear in the range 0.24-240 μg mL-1. The minimum detection limit was found 120 ng mL-1.The prepared sensor is also used as filter and found to be able to remove 90% of selenium. The dye has also been characterized using SEM investigation. As per the availability in literature or online literature, no such method is yet found to be reported, even no commercial strips such as EM quant or Merckoquant has been prepared for selenium. Thus, the proposed sensor is first of its type to detect and remove selenium (IV) and will prove commercially advantageous
