Abstract
OBJECTIVE: Lead and cadmium exposure during pregnancy has negative effects on mother and baby. Karabuk province is the center of the iron and steel industry and is a risky region in terms of lead and cadmium exposure. This study was conducted to determine the lead (Pb) and cadmium (Cd) levels in cord blood at birth and to evaluate the exposure of pregnant women. MATERIAL AND METHODS: This descriptive and analytical study was carried out at Karabük Province between 01 February 2017 and 01 March 2017. The sample of the study consisted of 60 pregnant women who had no hearing and speech problems, had been living in Karabük Province for at least 1 year and volunteered to participate in the research. In the research, 3 ml blood sample was taken from the part of the cord remaining on the placenta side through a sterile syringe, after umbilical cord is cut during childbirth. After the samples were labeled, they were stored in the -20 °C cooler until the analysis. The cord blood samples were analyzed using the AAS (Atomic Absorption Spectroscopy) Graphite System method. RESULTS: This study found that the average age of women was 29.01 ± 5.12, 43% were primary school graduates, 23.3% worked, 11.7% smoked, 73.3% had moderate income, 60% lived in the city center. We determined that the cord blood lead level was an average of 1.53 ± 0.72 μg / dl and the cord blood cadmium level was an average of 0.61 ± 0.19μg / L. In the study, cord blood lead and cadmium levels did not show statistically significant differences in terms of mother's age, education level, employment status, presence of chronic disease, smoking status, blood group and presence of anemia. However, in pregnant women with negative Rh factor (-), cord blood lead level (z = -2.083, p = 0.037) and cadmium level (z = -2.083, p = 0.037) were statistically significantly higher. CONCLUSIONS: Unlike the literature in our study, it was concluded that lead and cadmium levels in cord blood may be related to maternal RH factor, and further studies are needed on the subject.
