Włodzimierz Kozłowski THE COMMANDERS OF THE 31TH RIFLEMEN OF KANIÓW REGIMENT (ŁÓDŹ, SINCE 1935 ALSO IN SIERADZ). THE ATTEMPT OF CHARACTERIZATION. PART TWO, 1918–1928 During the second decade of the independence of Poland (1928–1939) – interrupted on September 1, 1939 – the 31th Riflemen of Kaniów Regiment (as a part of the 10th Infantry Division with headquartes in Łódź) was commanded by 6 officers. These were lieutenant-colonels and colonels: Leon Grot, Franciszek Dudziński, Jan Ciastoń, Jan Topczewski, dr. Stanisław Biegański and Wincenty Wnuk. The last of them had assumed command one day before the WW 2 started. He led the regiment to the battles in September 1939. The 31th Riflemen of Kaniów Regiment defended the line of the Warta river in the area of Sieradz. During withdrawal the regiment was successful tactically. Sometimes they had operation significance (Mszczonów). The 31th Riflemen of Kaniów Regiment received the honourable decoration: the War Order of Virtuti Militari.
