Abstract

Jan Hupka (1866-1952), a Doctor of Law at the Jagiellonian University, was the last owner of the Niwiska estate in the district of Kolbuszowa. In addition to working in the local government (among other things, he held office as the district marshal of Kolbuszowa), he was involved in the political activity at the turn of the 20th century. In 1896 he joined the Krakow Conservative Club. For 20 years, he was the member of the Diet of the Kingdom of Galicia and Lodomeria, where he presented agriculture and forestry bills. During World War I, Hupka became a member of the Supreme National Committee and chairman of the Department of Care of the Supreme National Committee, which took care of wounded legionnaires and their families. Thanks to this, Hupka was able to establish contact with Józef Piłsudski, which led to their cooperation. He travelled to hot countries to have a break from politics and everyday responsibilities. Jan Hupka visited southern Europe, northern Africa and India. After coming back home, he always published his memoirs, which contributed greatly to the increase in overseas tourism in Poland at the time. Hupka was a co-founder of the magazines devoted to farmers and emigrants. He wrote a number of articles and a few books, primarily on politics and his travels.
