Earthworms Impact in Sustainable Management of Intensively Managed Agro Ecosystems: Indian Scenario
Journal Title: Annual Research & Review in Biology - Year 2017, Vol 18, Issue 1
Abstract
Direct effects of agrochemicals on soil and belowground diversity are through indiscriminate application in the agricultural field, but through run off the chemical compounds contaminate the soil. The chemical fertilizers contain many hazardous compounds that may cause severe ecological and social constraints to the farmers as well as affect the micro and macro-fauna present in the soil. The yield and production of crops increased but the food quality for human consume is affected. As, the population increases the food security issue become more underlined, as to maintain the soil fertility and its degradation minimization. Hence, in current years consumer concern increasing for the issues such as food quality, environmental safety, and soil conservation. And, scientists are shifting from agricultural systems depending upon inorganic fertilizers towards viable agricultural practices. Hence, the use of organic fertilizers are promoted over the agrochemicals, but due to the high cost of transportation and solo impacts on yield and productivity not satisfactory. So, the integrated use of vermicompost and chemical fertilizer is adopted nowadays, to maintain belowground biodiversity and crop yield. We focus on the role of earthworm in ecosystem management with prior emphasis on nutrient management of agro-ecosystems through their castings.

Use of Probiotics as First Feed of Larval African Catfish Clarias gariepinus (Burchell 1822)
African catfish larvae do not have fully developed digestive system at onset of first exogenous feeding. Live feed like artemia have been used more than dry diets but is also costly. The gut microbiota may be influential...
Technical Assessment on the Operational Performance of Fish Pond in Lagos State, Nigeria
Technical factors that have potential influence on the performance of fish ponds in Lagos State were assessed. Questionnaires and on-the-spot assessment were used for collecting information on pond construction materials...
Pollen Characterization of Woody Species of the Cross River National Park, Nigeria
Pollen description for fifty two woody species obtained from the Cross River National Park was made. Standard methods of pollen collection (conducted in 12 months), storage, preparation (Erdmann's method) and quality ass...
Nutritional Evaluation of Various Parts of Canna indica L.
The nutritional composition of the leaf, rhizome and seed of Canna indica L. were examined. The nutritional composition of C. indica plant showed that the rhizome of C. indica contains 50.66% moisture, 4.17% carbohydrate...
Concentration of Selected Heavy Metals in Sediments and Liver of Wild African Catfish (Clarias gariepinus) in Lake Kanyaboli, Kenya
It is evident that high heavy metal concentrations in sediments are eventually magnified along the aquatic lives like fish hence affecting human health. The present study therefore sought to determine the concentration o...
