Education is a panacea: A study in Indian context
Journal Title: International Journal of Pedagogy, Innovation and New Technologies - Year 2015, Vol 2, Issue 2
Abstract
All education is a search for truth, as also a pursuit of social betterment and self-realization. The word ‘education’ literally means ‘to bring out’. In the ordinary sense the term ‘education’ implies systematic and scholastic instruction, as well as cultivation of physical, intellectual, aesthetic and moral faculties. Literacy and mere textual learning are not ‘education’. Education has to be much more than book-knowledge. The very first step in any mode of education is literacy- the ability to read and write. The problem of illiteracy is perhaps more acute in India than elsewhere in the world. Inspite of perfunctory measures having been adopted both in the public and private sectors the literacy rate in India has reached the level of 74 percent only up to 2011 (GoI, 2011). With the rapid rise of its population India will have the largest number of illiterates in the world by the year 2020. This alarming state calls for more stringent efforts towards eradication of illiteracy. The Constitution of India provides for universalisation of education for all children in the 5-11 years age group. This calls for vigorous measures for compulsory elementary and adult education. An attempt has been made through this paper to understand the various dimensions of Indian education system.
