Effect of biotechnology on biodiversity
Journal Title: International Journal of Farming and Allied Sciences - Year 2014, Vol 3, Issue 8
Abstract
Biotechnology has emerged as a key technology for economic development in the next century. Some of scientists believe that biodiversity is threatened by agriculture as whole, and particularly also by traditional methods of agriculture. Knowledge-based agriculture, including GM crops, can reduce this threat in the future. For instance, no-tillage practices and the replacement of pesticides through BT crops can improve fauna in fields, but Agroecologists (the defender of sustainable and organic agriculture) have another idea. They believe that Bt crops can reduce the microbial population, because the biological cycles are disabling in the fields, and decrease the competition among organisms and, their reasons; First, GM crops have resulted in small yield increases, thus they may not contribute much too increased food production. Second, GM crops pose a threat to crop biodiversity, and Finally, GM crops were introduced by private companies that have intellectual property rights to the main components of the technology. Geneticists argue that wide variabilities in genotypes and phenotypes within a species increase its chances for adaptation to changing environments and thus increase the likelihood of long term survival of at least some members of a species, and therefore reduction of diversity in our own environment may not be good.

Investigation and comparison of the ice nucleation activity in Fusarium avenaceum and Fusarium acuminatum
n spite of providing some industrial advantages, formation of the natural and artificial ice nuclei is considered as one of the most important causes limiting the plant growth and hence, incurring the economic and ecol...
Phytochemical studies of Some Terpene compounds in roots of Cynara scolymus
Artichoke (cynara scolymus) belongs to Astraceae family. It is native to the central Mediterranean, but now cultivated in many parts of the world. This plant has different therapeutic properties, including anti-cancer....
The Effect of Distance from Submerged Vanes to the Intake at Different Angles of Vanes on Controlling the Sediment Entering the Intake Branching from a 90° Convergent Bend
In a number of studies, using submerged vanes as a structure to control sediments entering the intake in curved paths has been investigated. Most of these studies were conducted on straight channels, or curved channels...
Assessment of yield, yield components and harvest index of bean cultivars under different plant densities in Ardal province
In order to evaluate the agronomic and physiological characteristics of bean cultivars under different plant densities, a factorial experiment was conducted in the lay out randomized complete block design with three re...
Improvement of tropical soils fertility by amendment with organic and mineral fertilizers
The transformation of urban waste into useful and exploitable organic matter such as compost may lead to an increase in agricultural production. In that context, compost made from pig manure was prepared and used in co...
