Effect of Bocce Game on Developing Visual Motor Integration among Children with Intellectual Disability

Abstract
Background: Visual Motor Integration (VMI) is the ability of the eyes and hands to work together in smooth, efficient patterns. A child who is challenged in this area may have difficulties to coordinate body movements in response to what he/she is seeing. Visual motor integration is an important variable which affects majority of the day to day activities of a child with intellectual disability. Objective: The present investigation is attempted to find out the effect of Bocce game on developing visual motor integration among children with intellectual disability. Sample: The subjects N=8, (four each, boys and girls, IQ ranging from 50-70) were selected from Govt. Rehabilitation Institute for Intellectual Disabilities (GRIID), Chandigarh based on set inclusion and exclusion criteria. Design: Purposive cum convenient sampling was used with, pre and post tests experimental method. Tool: The Finger dexterity board developed by Bhargava, published by the National Psychological Corporation, Agra was used. Results: The intervention (Bocce Game) was given for 20 sessions, each for one hour duration and five days per week. Effect of Bocce game on developing visual motor integration was checked by finger dexterity test. The pre and post tests mean scores of visual motor integration were 163.87 and 218.75 respectively and the t-value was 4.82 at 0.01 percent level of significance. When it was compared with regard to gender the mean scores of boys and girls were 62.25 and 41.75 respectively and the t-value was 2.86 at 0.05 percent level of significance. The statistical analysis shows the significant effect of Bocce game on developing visual motor integration among the selected subject. Conclusion: Based on the results, it is concluded that there was significant effect of Bocce on developing visual motor integration among children with intellectual disability.
