Effect of different solvents on extraction of phenolic compounds and antioxidant activity of hawthorn (Crataegus orientalis) fruits
Journal Title: Horticultural Studies - Year 2016, Vol 33, Issue 2
Abstract
Extraction of bio compounds from plant materials is one of the most important step of the processes such as dietary supplement production and recovery of the compounds from the industrial wastes. It is highly affected from the factors such as solvent type, particle size, extraction time and temperature. To determine the total phenolics, individual phenolic profile and antioxidant activity of Hawthorn (Crataegus orientalis) fruit extracted with different solvents and to specify the best solvent for extraction of phenolics were aimed in this research. Fruits, picked from wild growing trees in Beyşehir, were extracted with water, methanol and methanol:water (1:1) mixture. Highest total phenolics and antioxidant activity were observed in methanol:water extract. While gallic acid was extracted effectively in water, methanol:water mixture was the best solvent for extraction of procyanidin B1, procyanidin B2, (-)- epicatechin, epigallocatechin gallate and rutin.
A comparative study with commercial rootstocks to determine the tolerance to heavy metal (Pb) in the drought and salt stress tolerant eggplant breeding lines
Negative effects of heavy metals on plants are peroxidation of lipids in cell membranes, production of free oxygen radicals, disorders in photosynthesis, damages in DNAs and as a result death of the cell. Plant developme...
Collection and determination of morphological traits of sainfoin (Onobrychis sativa L.) populations from Antalya natural flora
One of the most important and prior subjects in forage breeding programmes is to cultivate the wild forms of plants. In the present study; the seeds of sainfoin wild forms which are available within Antalya natural flora...

Using possibilities of some agricultural wastes in open-field banana cultivation
Usage of farmyard manure is the one of the major factors to increase production cost in banana cultivation. Besides increasing the production costs, other disadvantages of farmyard manure are playing active role on carry...
Effects of drought stress on germination characters of some alfalfa (Medicago sativa L.) varieties
This study was conducted to determine the responses of some alfalfa varieties to different drought stress at germination stage. Alfalfa varieties Bilensoy-80, Alsancak, Gözlü-1, Prosementi and Isıde were used as plant ma...
