Effect of exogenous glutathione in extender on the freezability of Nili-Ravi buffalo (Bubalus bubalis) bull spermatozoa
Journal Title: Animal Science Papers and Reports - Year 2010, Vol 28, Issue 3
Abstract
The study was designed to investigate the effect of exogenous glutathione supplementation (0.0, 0.5, 1.0, 2.0 and 3.0 mM) in tris-citric acid extender on post-thaw sperm motility, viability, plasma membrane and acrosomal integrity of buffalo (Bubalus bubalis) spermatozoa at 0, 3 and 6 hours after thawing. Glutathione supplementation of the extender upto 2.0 mM concentration increased (P≤0.05) sperm motility, viability, plasma membrane integrity and acrosomal integrity at 0, 3 and 6 hours after thawing in a dose-dependent manner compared to the control. However, glutathione supplementation at higher concentration (3.0 mM) was not beneficial for any of semen quality parameters. It is concluded that glutathione supplementation (up to 2.0 mM) of the extender improves the post-thaw quality of buffalo bull spermatozoa.

Genetic analysis of lactation persistency in the Polish Holstein-Friesian cows
The objectives of this study were to analyze the genetic properties of three measures of lactation persistency in Polish Holstein-Friesian cows, and possibly to choose one measure which could be used for estimation of br...
Hematological and biochemical blood parameters in dairy cows depending on the management system
Monitoring the health of dairy herds is central to the assessment of animal health and welfare. The aim of this study was to analyse hematological and biochemical parameters in Holstein-Friesian dairy cows depending on t...
Relationship between milk yield of cows and their 24-hour walking activity
Despite many genetic and environmental factors, the level of physical activity may be a very good indicator of the physiological (e.g. estrus, approaching parturition) or health status of cows. The aim of this study was...
Effect of management change on selected welfare parameters of cows
The aim of the study was to determine the effect of relocation from a tie-stall barn to the facility with free-stall housing on adaptation of cows measured by behaviours latency and lenghts of the first episodes. Cows w...
