Effect of Non Linear Sorption on Multi-Species Solute Transport in a Coupled Fracture Matrix System

Abstract

In this paper, a numerical model has been developed for modeling three species radionuclide transport in a coupled fracture matrix system. All the species are assumed to undergo non linear sorption within the rock fracture. The first species alone is assumed to diffuse into the rock matrix and subjected to non linear sorption in the rock matrix. A constant continuous source is assumed at the inlet of the fracture for the first species. The processes considered are advection and hydrodynamic dispersion in the fracture, lateral diffusion into the rock matrix, radioactive decay of the radionuclides, and non linear adsorption in the fracture and rock matrix. The non linear coupled equations are solved using implicit finite difference method. Results suggest that the concentration of the first and second species increases in the fracture with increasing matrix porosity. The concentration of the third species remains zero for different matrix porosities, matrix diffusion coefficients and sorption intensities due to the decaying concentration of the first two species. For high matrix diffusion coefficients, the behavior of the first and second species is different. As the sorption becomes more unfavourable, the concentration of the first and second species increases in the fracture
