Effect of various levels of gamma irradiation on some characteristics of rose seedling

Journal Title: International Research Journal of Applied and Basic Sciences - Year 2015, Vol 9, Issue 9

Abstract

Rose (Rosa spp.) is enumerated as an important ornamental and commercial plant worldwide. Plant breeding and plant biotechnology techniques have been employed to improvement of quantitative and qualitative characteristics in ornamental plants for many years. In this research, effect of gamma irradiation on some characteristics of rose seedlings was evaluated. The rose cultivar named Marcia was treated with gamma radiation of 20, 30, 40, 50, 60, 70, 80 and 90 gray. Results of ANOVA showed that treatment with various levels of gamma radiation has significant effect on seedling height, number of offsets, and number of leaf, fresh weight and dry weight of rose seedlings. Results of ANOVA showed that treatment of rose seedling with different levels of gamma ray had significant effect on seedling viability and seedling mortality, and there were small portion of seedlings were died as a result of treatment with various levels of gamma radiation. A large number of seedlings were viable and survived. Correlation coefficient evaluation showed that number of leaves have significant effect and positive correlation with seedling height, number of offsets, leaf fresh weight and leaf dry weight. The number of survived seedlings has no significant effect with any seedling characteristics. The number of offsets per plant has significant and positive effect with both seedling height and seedling fresh weight. The correlation between seedling height and seedling fresh weight was also significant. Regression analysis showed that, there was observed negative correlation and decreasing trend with the increasing of gamma dozes for all seedling characteristics. Therefore, according to the results obtained from this research, it was concluded that treatment with various dozes of gamma ray destroyed few seedling and the effect of various dozes was different for different characteristics of seedlings.
