Effective supplementation in modern professional sport

Journal Title: Medycyna Sportowa - Year 2012, Vol 28, Issue 1

Abstract

Currently most people don’t need there to be convinced on the benefits accruing from performance-enhacing properties of supplementation in sports.Demand for basic nutrition components in competitive as well as recreational sports often significantly exceed the standards required for „the non-training,”, while a lot of supplements have become an integral part of diet programs incorporated into sports training process, virtually, in every sport discipline. It has been postulated that a properly compiled, individual diet, balanced in composition and quality, complemented by targeted supplementation, could improve training effects and athletic performance by 3-5%, which, at the level of competitive sport, could decide a victor. For this reason, the market of dietary supplements targeting for sportsment and women has remain, for many years, one of the most dynamically developing branches of „sports industry”. The question arises, would science and knowledge in this area effectively keep pace with the situation on the ground, facilitating taping the benefits of various dietary supplements and the possibility of their effective application in various sports? Is this knowledge constantly updated and regularly toped up with results and conclusions from credible scientific studies? The aim of this review paper is the objective presentation of the latest scientific breakthrroughs, including practical, based on available literature and critical analysis of the topic, in relation to selected supplements commonly used in sports: Q10 coenzyme, a-lipoic acid (ALA), b-hydroxy-b-methylbutyrate (HMB), taurine, L-arginine and isomaltulose.
