EFFECTS OF DIETARY VITAMIN C SUPPLEMENTATION ON VITAMIN C BLOOD PLASMA CONTENT, BODY ANTIOXIDANT POTENTIAL AND FITNESS IN YOUNG FEMALE ATHLETES

Journal Title: Medycyna Sportowa - Year 2017, Vol 33, Issue 2

Abstract

Background. The aim of the study was to analyze the effect of dietary vitamin C supplementation in young volleyball players on vitamin C blood content, antioxidant potential and fitness. Material and methods. The sample comprised women aged 15-18 years, who did not use any supplementation (control group) and took vitamin C in 200, 500, 1000 and 2000 mg doses. The effect of each dose on superoxide dismutase (SOD) and catalase CAT) on the total antioxidant potential (TAS) was studied. It was measured using FRAP index. The measurements comprised such parame¬ters as anaerobic fitness, measured using the maximal power index and total workout indicators and aerobic fitness. Besides, the contents of energy and some nutrients were calculated in volleyball players’ diets. Results. The results indicated that the 500 mg dose of vitamin C was most effective. Significant increases in CAT activity were noted, ranging from 231.5 to 437.2 [k/gHB] at anaerobic fitness level, measured using maximal power indicators, ranging from 8.3 to 8.9 [W] and total workout indicators, ranging from 191.2 to 210.1 [J]. Moreover, an increase in vitamin C serum level was noted, however, the value was statistically insignificant.. The study revealed deficiencies of energy, fat, carbohydrates, vitamin C and partly vitamin A and E in the daily food rations of the volleyball players. Conclusions. The study on vitamin C supplementation in the sample of volleyball players allow¬ed choosing the optimal dose, based on the effect on vitamin C serum level, antioxidant potential and fitness. Further extended studies on this issue are indicated.
