EFFECTS OF NUTRITION ON BONE MINERALISATION IN WOMEN DURING THEIR SPORT CAREER AND AFTER IT'S TERMINATION
Journal Title: Medycyna Sportowa - Year 2007, Vol 23, Issue 2
Abstract
The structure of bone tissue and the influence of nutrition factors on bone formation and resorbtion were discussed in the paper. Current scientific literature on the role of nutrition in bone tissue metabolism was reviewed. Interrelations between calcium intake and bones condition in women, including professional sportswomen in various life stages were presented. It was underlined, that the most important factor for bone mineralization was appropriate calcium intake during childhood and adolescence, when organism tended to gain peak bone mass reaching 90% of maximum. It is also the period when regular training in many sport disciplines starts. Insufficient consumption of calcium by sportswomen, which is usually the result of nutritional restrictions, could interfere with realization of genetic program concerning bone mineralization and could be an obstacle for maintaining bone tissue mass on appropriate level, both during and after the termination of sport career. The risk of osteopenia as a result of dietary calcium deficiency was pointed out. The effects of dietary supplementation with calcium in sportswomen in various life stages, as well as the influence of lifestyle of former sportswomen (dietary habits and physical activity) on bone tissue mineralization were discussed. According to WHO recommendations, the need for densitometric examinations of bones and educative activities concerning healthy nutrition both during and after the termination of sport career as well as continuation of physical activity in further periods of life was underlined.
