Effects of risedronate on tooth movement and relapse in ovariectomized rats

Journal Title: Forum Ortodontyczne - Year 2009, Vol 5, Issue 3

Abstract

Aim: The purpose of this study was to examine the effects of systemic administration of a bisphosphonate, risedronate, on tooth movement in an ovariectomized population of rats. Risedronate is a bisphosphonate known to inhibit osteoclastic bone resorption. Material and Methods: Sixteen ovariectomized female rats were divided into two groups (n=8). One group for control and another for experimental treatment with risedronate at a dosage of 5 μg/kg for two months. Following subcutaneously administration of risedronate, both groups of rats had a mesializing orthodontic force placed between the maxillary first and second molars for three weeks. Orthodontic force was removed for one week to evaluate relapse. Tooth movement and relapse were measured using an Optispec video microscope for dental casts before and after movement and following relapse. Histological evaluation was performed on both groups. Results: Our results showed no statistical difference between the control and experimental groups. Orthodontic tooth movement and relapse were similar in both populations. Conclusion: Pharmacological considerations suggest that certain classes of drugs, such as Risedronate, could inhibit or slow tooth movement undesirably, our result did not support this believe.
