EFFECTS OF X-RADIATION ON THE SALIVARY COMPOSITIONS

Abstract
Background: Saliva plays an important role in maintaining healthy teeth. There are many factors that may affect saliva compositions furthermore the X-radiation. Knowledge about the effects of irradiation on the saliva remains of great interest to many researchers. The aim of this study: To observe the effect of radiation on the most salivary organic and inorganic constituents in patients with head and neck malignancies treated by fractionated radiotherapy. Materials and Methods: This study included eighty male subjects between the ages 30-45 years, forty patients with head and neck cancers treated by fractionated radiotherapy for three months and forty others were healthy volunteers. The total dose is 40 to 44 Gy, given in five fractions per week with a daily target dose of 1.8-2.0 Gy per day. Evaluation of most organic and inorganic components in saliva were achieved for all individuals following radiotherapy. Total protein, albumin /IgM, IgA, IgG/ amylase, calcium, magnesium, phosphate concentrations of saliva were evaluated using Biuret test, turbidimetery and spectrophotometry respectively. Results: The statically analyses showed significant increase in total protein and albumin levels in radio-treated patient group when compared to control group and a significant decrease in salivary IgA and IgM levels in radio-treated patient group but there is a non-significant increase in salivary IgG level was observed when compared to control group. The statically analyses showed a significant reduction in amylase levels was observed in radio-treated patients when compared to control group. The statically analysis also showed no significant differences in Calcium, Phosphate and Magnesium levels in the patient with radio-therapy when compared with control group. Conclusion: The study concluded that the X-radiation affect the most composition of saliva and changes some of their proportions.
