Efficiency of Alfaprostol in Heat and Pregnancy Synchronization in African Dwarf Goat (Capra Hircus Hircus) Under Extensive Management

Journal Title: Journal of Veterinary Advances - Year 2014, Vol 4, Issue 2

Abstract

In order to study the efficacy of heat and pregnancy synchronization of alfaprostol (PGF2α analogue) in African Dwarf goat (Capra hircus hircus), thirty two animals (4 bucks and 28 does) were used. Two doses of 2mg of alfaprostol were injected intramuscularly to each animal at 11 days interval. Behavioural and morphological changes associated with heat were registered, but only females that accepted mounting by the male were considered in œstrus. At the end of the synchronization protocol, 67.86% of the does were observed in œstrus. However, the appearance of heats was extended over 13 days, with 78.95% occurring between the first and seventh days following the end of the synchronization protocol. 42.10% of serviced goats returned to heat within the 21st days following the acceptance of the male and only 45.45% of the remaining females maintained the pregnancy to term. The heats induced in African Dwarf goat by alfaprostol were not synchronous enough; this synchronization technique would not be very suitable for systematic artificial insemination in African Dwarf goat. Insemination on observed œstrus would yield better results of fertility.
