Efficiency of treatment of rectal prolapse according to Altemeier

Abstract
Introduction. Complete rectal prolapse is a disease that causes social impairment and reduces the patient’s quality of life.Aim. The objective of the study was to evaluate the results of treating complete rectal prolapse using the Altemeier procedure.Material and methods. 23 patients (22 women, 1 man) aged 67 to 95 (average age 84) who have undergone a surgery for complete rectal prolapse using the Altemeier Procedure at the Colorectal Surgery Unit between 2006-2010. The analysis was performed based on medical records and direct interviews with the patients (a survey over the phone). Follow-up period: 4 years.Results. Recurrence of the disease was observed in 8 patients (34%) from year for 4 year, increased constipation in 13 patients (56%), bleeding while defecating in 4 patients (18%), incontinence in 13 patients (59%), feeling of incomplete defecation in 5 patients (22.7%).Conclusions. 1. The Altemeier Procedure is a method of treating complete rectal prolapse diseases, which has an efficacy of 70%. 2. A favourable element of the Altemeier Procedure is the lack of need to open the abdomen and use general anaesthesia, reduction of pain and shortened hospitalization period. 3. An unfavourable sign after performing this procedure is constipation, which occurred in 56% of patients in the presented material.
