El colibrí como símbolo de la sexualidad masculina entre los mexicas

Abstract

The article studies the hummingbird as a symbol of masculinity among the ancient Nahuas through various guidelines: 1) Quetzalcoatl as the mentor of self-sacrifi ce shows to mankind that the blood coming from the penis possesses the masculine potency to fertilize; while the god in hummingbird costume would be indicating such potency; 2) Huitzilopochtli as hummingbird represents the soul of the warriors who died on the battlefi eld. In consequence, in Nahua thought these birds were the opposite and complementary pairs of the women who died in childbirth. Th is idea has its origin in the parallelism of war with labor and death in childbirth; 3) A hummingbird sipping from a fl ower is a metaphorical expression of sexual intercourse. The flower is the representation of the feminine sexuality because its petals symbolize the vulva, while the hummingbird is the symbol of the masculine sexuality and, specifi cally, the penis; 4) The use of hummingbird as a charm for courtship in colonial times and following centuries can be explained by its link with the sun as masculine potency. Th us the bird is the fertility aspect of the sun.
