ELEMENTARY SCHOOL STUDENTS’ HANDWRITING SPEED: CROSS-SECTIONAL STUDY

Abstract

The purpose of this study is to seek out level of primary school students’ handwriting speed according to school, class, gender, handness, paper position, pencil grip posture and sitting posture for writing. This study is a descriptive research. 497 student in grades 2 through 7 attending six different schools in Burdur participated in the study 258 girls and 239 boys included at each grade level, and 11 of the children were left- handed. The study was applied two times, one was in first semester in December, second was in second semester in May. Two samples of handwriting were collected from each student. For each sample lined paper was used. The participating children were asked to copy the sentences which was printed on a given paper as quickly as possible for a period of three minutes. While students are writing, to examine the ergonomic factors, their performances are recorded. Handwriting speed is calculated according to letters written in three minutes. Ergonomic factors form is used to examine paper position, pencil grip posture and sitting posture. The results revealed that handwriting speed is significant according to school and gender. Girls wrote faster than boys. Writing speed is not significant according to ergonomic factors.
