Endoscopic profile of primary bronchopulmonary cancer of the smoker versus non-smoker in Ouagadougou
Journal Title: JOURNAL OF FUNCTIONAL VENTILATION AND PULMONOLOGY - Year 2019, Vol 10, Issue 31
Abstract
Introduction. Our study aims to determine the endoscopic profile of primary bronchopulmonary cancer of smoker versus non-smokers in Burkina Faso in order to improve the diagnostic approach. Methods. This was a retrospective study that analyzed the charts of patients followed in oncology and pulmonology departments in the city of Ouagadougou from January 2007 to May 2017. Patients with histologically confirmed lung cancer were selected and whose record was exploitable. Sociodemographic characteristics, histology, endoscopic aspects were analyzed. Results. We have collected over a period of 10 years, 115 cases of primary bronchopulmonary cancers. The average age of patients was 56.6 years (standard deviation: 15.5 years) with extremes of 19 and 99 years. The sex ratio was 1.6. An inflammatory appearance was found in all patients. Spur thickening, stenosing and budding lesions were most common in both smokers and non-smokers. The lesions were unilateral in 66.7%, proximal in 66.7% and associated in most patients. Conclusion. The endoscopic aspects of bronchopulmonary cancer have no etiological specificity in the smoker as in the non-smoker but are suggestive of bronchopulmonary cancer and recommends a histological examination not to omit a neoplastic process.
