ENSEMBLE PLAYNG – A KEY APPROACH TO PIANO TRAINING FOR PEOPLE WITH SPECIAL EDUCATIONAL NEEDS

Journal Title: Knowledge International Journal - Year 2018, Vol 26, Issue 2

Abstract

Piano education reveals significant prospects for the development of people with special educational needs (SEN) in the psycho-emotional, intellectual, motor and socio-cultural context. There is a need for a wider study of piano training as an interactive activity with many beneficial effects not only in music pedagogy, but also in art pedagogy and art therapy (in particular music therapy). Depending on the nature and extent of disability, it is necessary to use non-verbal methods to some extent to train people with SEN. An ensemble musing - playing four hands on one or two pianos - is one of the most successful methods of smooth, natural and fast introduction of the student with SEN in the metric, rhythmic and dynamic expressive possibilities of music. Joint music is an effective part of a complex approach for the development of SEN individuals. With the active participation of the educator, who plays with the pupil, the pieces studied - tiny or longer ones - immediately sound like melodic and harmonious rich music. This gives the SEN student the much needed confidence in expressing oneself and in the success of a non-verbal communication that is often leading in hearing-impaired persons or in people with impaired brain-motor activity. Much of the disability has a negative impact on the speech function, which has become the first in modern education and training. The use of verbal means is minimized in the training musical ensemble. This makes it widely applicable to a significant percentage of people with disabilities. It is especially suited to the initial stage of piano education for people with SEN but accompanies all subsequent stages of piano and music teaching. When playing four hands, a piano teacher and student are physically close, which enhances the psychological influence and gives the student security. The teacher can easily penetrate into the learner's psyche and feelings, understand his individual problems in order to be a useful assistant in progress. The play of two separate pianos gradually teaches the student greater autonomy and confidence in their own achievements and skills - a serious step in every person with SEN. In this case, the student has more space to act on a larger number of keys, which is particularly important for developing motor skills and brain activity. An opportunity occurs in teacher-student interaction for playing much larger volume of plays and melodies, which performed as ensemble music, create mutual feeling of integrity and emotional empathy.
