Environmental Ethics and the Responsibility of the Media Towards Animal Rights: The Case of Turkish Newspapers

Journal Title: The journal of international civilization studies - Year 2023, Vol 8, Issue 2

Abstract

Today, ecological issues have reached critical levels, posing a significant threat to nature and all forms of life. Without timely and effective measures, the world faces increasingly serious ecological problems in the near future. Ecological approaches encompass valuing every element that makes up nature, and they also include ethical considerations that question human interference in the habitat and rights of other species. The fundamental goal of these approaches is to establish ethical foundations for social policies aimed at preserving the lives of all elements constituting nature. In this context, animal rights are considered as part of natural rights and fall within the scope of ecological approaches. In Turkey, animal rights are being concretized through numerous controversial laws and are a subject of discussion in various forums. Among the key factors influencing the presence of these discussions on the societal and political agenda is the media. Therefore, this study examines how animal rights are portrayed in the Turkish media. The study initially focuses on the theoretical background of the subject and subsequently conducts a content analysis of news articles related to animals in the newspapers with the highest circulation, namely Hürriyet, Sabah, and Sözcü, and provides recommendations regarding the issue.
