Eosinophil-derived neurotoxin (EDN) in relation to IgA autoantibodies to epidermal transglutaminase in dermatitis herpetiformis

Journal Title: Dermatologia Kliniczna - Year 2009, Vol 11, Issue 1

Abstract

Introduction: Dermatitis herpetiformis (DH) is characterized by autoimmunity to epidermal transglutaminase (eTG) with neutrophil-rich infiltrates containing admixture of eosinophils. Eosinophil-derived neurotoxin (EDN/RNase 2) is a major product of active eosinophils. Objective: The aim of this study was to analyse whether in DH IgA autoantibodies against eTG are related to activation of eosinophils estimated by measuring EDN/ RNase 2 concentration. Material and methods: 25 patients with DH and 21 asymptomatic relatives of patients with the pemphigus vulgaris and pemphigus foliaceus group of diseases (control group) were studied. The levels of serum IgA autoantibodies to eTG and concentrations of EDN/RNase 2 in sera were evaluated with ELISA and statistically analysed. Results: Concentrations of EDN/RNase 2 were not statistically different in patients with DH and relatives. There was no significant correlation between the level of IgA autoantibodies to eTG and concentration of EDN/RNase 2 in patients with DH. Conclusion: The serum concentration of EDN/RNase 2 is an insignificant marker of activation of eosinophils in DH. It seems that IgA autoantibodies to eTG are unrelated to the activation of eosinophils measured by the release of EDN/RNase 2.
