Epidemiological study of Bacterial meningitis in Hospitalized children in Qom province of Iran between 2013-2015

Journal Title: International Research Journal of Applied and Basic Sciences - Year 2016, Vol 10, Issue 3

Abstract

Introduction: Bacterial meningitis is among the most serious and dangerous infections in children. Given the extreme importance of bacterial meningitis in pediatrics, and considering that some of the diagnostic tests available in our country are far from international standards, we intended to evaluate the diagnostic value of laboratory tests in patients with bacterial meningitis. Material and Methods: It is a retrospective-descriptive investigation into 122 bacterial meningitis children, hospitalized in Hazrat Masoumeh Hospital(specialized children Hospital), located in Qom province, Iran, from March 21, 2013 to March 22, 2015. For data analysis, SPSS18 was employed. Results: Findings of this study showed that bacterial meningitis is more common among boys, with the highest prevalence among children aged 2- month to 7-year. Also, fever was reported as the major cause of visiting the medical center. Among the subjects, 46 (37.7%), 47 (38.5%), and 4 (3.27%) patients had leukocytosis, hyponatremia, and positive blood culture, respectively. The cerebrospinal fluid (CSF) was clear and colorless in 53 cases (43.4%). In 69 subjects (56.5%), the CSF glucose level was lower than 50%. Increased CSF protein (CSF-PR) was observed in 70 (57.3%) patients. In general, there were six cases with positive CSF culture. In addition, only 14 microorganism cases (11.4%) were observed in cerebrospinal fluid Gram stain. Discussion and Conclusion: Levels of positive blood culture, positive CSF culture, and positive CSF Gram stain were much lower in this study, compared to other studies.
