Journal Title: INTERNATIONAL JOURNAL OF ADVANCED MEDICINE - Year 2017, Vol 1, Issue 4
Abstract
Background: Epidemiological data assessment is an important tool for measuring the burden of disease in population. Demographic prole, geographical distribution and outcome of the disease can vary in pediatric emergencies. Material and Methods: Retrospective study was conducted in the pediatric emergency department(ED) on children 14 years or less in a tertiary care hospital of North India. Data was collected from inpatient registers and from the medical record section and divided into gender, geographical distribution, age group, number of days of hospital stay and disease frequency. Results: Out of the total patients, 57.7% were males and 42.3% were females. Majority of the patients were from rural areas (66.6%). The most common presented illnesses were involving the respiratory system. Conclusions: This study concludes that the rural pediatric population is more affected as compared to urban. Respiratory system involvement was the leading cause of hospital admissions.
