Epidemiology of osteoporotic fractures

Journal Title: Postępy Nauk Medycznych - Year 2012, Vol 25, Issue 3

Abstract

Lifetime fracture risk of osteoporotic fracture in 50-year-old women is 40%, (including the fracture of proximal femur – 17.5%, spine and radius 16%), in men it is 13% (fractures of: proximal femur 6%, spine 5% and radius 2.5%). In 2000 in Europe there were 3,119,000 osteoporotic fractures in population aged over 50. According to estimates in 2050 there will be 4.5 million femur fractures, whereas in 2000 the number reached 1.6 million. On the basis of available publications it can be estimated that in Poland in 2010 in population aged over 50 there were 2.710 million osteoporotic fractures, including 2.247 million in women and 463 thousand in men. Taking into consideration aging of the population it can be assessed that the number of proximal femur fractures in 2025 will reach 3,239,564, while in 2035 – 4,098,878. The frequency of proximal femur fractures in Polish women aged over 50 is 283/100 000. 60% of spinal fractures are asymptomatic, and less then 10% requires hospitalization.<br>Fatality in the first year after proximal femur fracture ranges between 20-30% and 45-52% in underdeveloped regions and is higher in men (25%) than women (20%). Studies on the population of the United States of America showed that fracture risk among non-Hispanic white women is almost 30% greater that among African American and Mexican American women. Despite aging of the population a secular trend has been noted in many countries over the last years – decrease in the number of proximal femur fractures. Frequency of these fractures decreased in: USA and Canada (-2.5%), France (-1.2%), however there was an increase in Spain and Japan (+3.8%) and UK (+2.4%).
