ESTABLISHMENT OF TECHNOLOGY AND DESIGN TEACHER SECTIONS IN UNIVERSITY

Abstract
This study was carried out to emphasize the significance of setting up Technology and Design teacher sections in universities. Nowadays information technology is changing perpetually; all individuals should have 21st century skills, demanded by business and education world. For this reason, some lessons related with information, media and technology skills are taught in secondary schools in our country starting from the year 2000’s. Technology and Design lesson is accepted as one out of these lessons. It is thought that it is important to raise the awareness of the students about technology and design, which is anticipated as a process that improves tudent's creativity. On the other hand, no sections have been set up in any university to train the teachers of these lessons. This study was conducted as a qualitative research. During this study, firstly official documents were obtained from the websites of official institutions. Secondly, printed resources were collected from official institutions and all these materials were reviewed according to the qualitative research principles. Study results showed that Technology and Design teacher section in the next decade was determined as one of the twenty teacher branches. On the other hand, Technology and Design teacher section in the next decade has been one of the five sections approved by Higher Education Council. Therefore, setting up Technology and Design teacher sections in universities was proposed, and attaining this goal was seen very significant in terms of maintaining students’ awareness related with technology. On the other hand, it is considered that graduates of Technology and Design sections established in universities will be assigned as teacher with a great assignment rate in near future.
