Esterase: The Isozyme in Fishes.

Abstract

Esterases are lipid-hydrolyzing enzymes with great significance in genetics and toxicology studies and have been used as most popular biochemical marker in various fishes and non-fishes for analyzing a range of information w.r.t. genetic similarity, variations, breeding performance, disease resistance and many more parameters of economic importance. Their analysis is also used for discrimination of species and clarification of taxonomic status in many taxa and became inevitable tool for biochemical genetic analysis in fishes as well as non-fishes. They dominated the research scenario in many aspects of biochemical and molecular analysis in fishes for a long period covering around 4-5 decades. Till now esterases are dominating various research activities to glean information on biochemical/physiological aspects of organisms.
