Estimation of lowland river cross-section changes for different soils
Journal Title: Annals of Warsaw University of Life Sciences – SGGW. Land Reclamation - Year 2018, Vol 50, Issue 4
Abstract
This paper involves a comparative analysis of cross-sectional changes at selected reaches of a lowland river, flowing through the areas of mineral and organic soils. The comparisons were made at the background of design and execution assumptions from the period 1967–1971. Main processes, responsible for the observed changes of riverbeds in mineral soils (silting, conservation works) and organic soils (subsidence, disappearance of the peat deposit), were identified. In case of organic soils, the decrease of cross-sectional area by approximately from 30 to 60% was estimated in comparison to the original project assumptions, and the subsidence of river banks reached even 0.5 m in relation to the level determined in 1967. In the area of mineral soils, more considerable variability of cross-sectional area was noted along with minor changes of river banks elevation, that resulted most likely from the performed maintenance works.

Effect of deforestation on water chemistry in the Kościeliska Valley in the Western Tatras in southern Poland
Bark beetle infestation is a leading source of local tree stand damage in Tatra National Park. In addition, hurricane-force winds also cause damage to tree stands, as in the case of the 2013 wind event in the Kopki Kości...
Analysis of thermal diffusivity data determined for selected organic topsoil layer
Thermal diffusivity (KT) is a very complex soil property. However, proper estimation of this parameter is very important for the study of thermal processes in the soil. Nevertheless, the thermal diffusivity of peat and o...
Treatment of bath greywater using cartridge filters as a way to reduce water consumption in households
Nearly one third of the high quality water in households is used for flushing toilets. Water resources in Poland are relatively poor. Therefore the use of water of inferior quality parameters to flush the...
Hydrological and hydraulic analysis of a small lowland watercourse flow capacity and its functioning in the region of Silesian Lowlands in the context of rainfall water management
The built-up areas in the catchments of small lowland watercourses faced with the risk of particularly devastating natural hazards. This risk is especially prevalent in the mouth reaches. The increasingly intense extreme...
