Etiology of malocclusions and dental abnormalities with a special focus on pharmacotherapy in pregnant women

Abstract
[b] Introduction.[/b] The etiology of malocclusion studies the causes of abnormalities of the masticatory system. There are many reasons for classifying disorders within the facial part of the skull. The majority of malocclusions and dental defects are multifactorial. [b]Aim[/b]. The aim of this study is to present views on the etiology of malocclusions with a special focus placed on the pharmacotherapy of pregnant women, based on the literature of the years 1988-2013. [b]Materials and methods[/b]. A review of the literature from the years 1998-2013 was reviewed using the PubMed database. The following key words were used: etiology, malocclusion, masticatory disorders, drug therapy during pregnancy, immunosuppression during pregnancy, premature. [b]Results.[/b] Out of 180 positions of literature 31 were selected and analyzed from the years 1998 to 2013. [b]Conclusions[/b]. Malocclusions are not caused by pathological processes, but by moderate impairment of the course of normal development. Sometimes the cause of masticatory system disorders is specific, but often it is possible to observe that various factors interact, so it is difficult to identify one specific etiological factor responsible for the development of malocclusions.
