Evaluation criteria of engineering and planning solutions of roundabouts

Abstract

This article presents the results of the research of selection criteria for the evaluation of engineering and planning solutions of roundabouts, the advantages of the placement of roundabouts are presented. Different approaches to defining the traffic capacity of roundabouts were analyzed. It was found that the average delay of vehicles significantly affects changes in movement mode in circular intersections. Service level classification (ease of movement) on roundabouts depending on the size of the average delay of transport is considered. The main criteria for the evaluation of engineering and planning solution are the node carrying capacity, minimizing transport costs at the intersection, road safety, the geometrical parameters of circular intersections and the environmental assessment. The node capacity ultimately depends on the length of the interlacing line. The longer is the line of interlacing, the easier is the process of traffic flows interlacing, more cars can move on a circular roadway. Evaluation criteria can be both quantitative and qualitative. In addition, the intersection of urban roads with a circular traffic, must have the opportunity of further development (the construction of interchanges at different levels).
