Evaluation of Antimicrobial, Antifungal, and Cytotoxic Properties of Abroma augusta Linn.
Journal Title: Asian Journal of Chemical Sciences - Year 2017, Vol 3, Issue 2
Abstract
Objective: This present study has been undertaken to evaluate the antimicrobial, antifungal and cytotoxic properties of four different fractionates such as petroleum ether, chloroform, ethyl acetate and dia-ion resin adsorbed fractions of Abroma augusta leaf extract. Methodology: The antimicrobial and antifungal properties have been characterized by disc diffusion method. The cytotoxicity property was determined against brine shrimp nauplii. Results and Conclusion: Among the four fractionates, the dia-ion resin adsorbed fraction showed the highest activity towards the S. aureus, E. coli bacteria and the fungus C. albicans with the zone inhibition of 1213 mm which was comparable with that of the standard Kanamycin. The chloroform, petroleum ether, and ethyl acetate fraction was exhibited least activity toward the bacteria and fungus with the zone inhibition of 69 mm. Similarly, the dia-ion resin adsorbed fractions showed the highest antifungal activity with the zone inhibition of 15 mm. From the results of cytotoxicity test, it was observed that the chloroform and ethyl acetate fractions were found be the highest active on 6, 12, 18, 24, and 30h of exposures in which almost all the nauplii were dead. From the corresponding LD50 values, the chloroform and ethyl acetate fractions were found to be the highest toxic against Artemia salina nauplii of 75.019 and 65.553 ppm, respectively. It has been predicted that the Abroma augusta leaves might be considered as a potent cytotoxic agent for further advanced research.
