Evaluation of efficacy of different materials used for bonding orthodontic brackets – literature review.
Journal Title: Journal of Stomatology (Czasopismo Stomatologiczne) - Year 2012, Vol 65, Issue 2
Abstract
Introduction. Orthodontic treatment with fixed orthodontic braces requires bonding the brackets to patients’ teeth. The ideal strength of bonding between the bracket and the tooth should be both sufficiently high to last over the duration of treatment and sufficiently low to allow removing the brackets at the end of the treatment without causing any damage to the enamel surface. Aim of the study. Basing on the literature review advantages and disadvantages of modern adhesives used for bonding brackets to the enamel surface: composite materials, resin modified glass-ionomers and other adhesives were presented. Achieving optimal physical properties of the orthodontic bonding composites depends on adequate light-curing process, therefore study comparing the increase of temperature of the dental pulp after light-curing by four available on the market polymerization units was described. Summary. The knowledge of the properties of orthodontic adhesives may help to select adequate bonding system in a clinical situation. Further progress in studies on adhesion is expected to lead to improving the properties of these materials in order to subsequentially provide optimal bonding strength between the bracket and the enamel surface for effective treatment.
