Evaluation of flexural strength of acrylic resins polymerized for two methods

Journal Title: RSBO - Year 2009, Vol 6, Issue 2

Abstract

Introduction: Recently the conventional polymerization of acrylic resin has been changed by microwaves polymerization. Objective: The purpose of this study was to evaluate flexural strength of three different acrylic resins as for the cycle of conventional and microwaves polymerization. Material and methods: Specimens of 65 mm X 10 mm and 2.5 mm of dimension were made with different acrylic resins and polymerized through the conventional and microwaves techniques. The specimens were divided in six groups in agreement with the mark and the polymerization type respectively: G1 (Clássico Microwaves), G3 (Vip Dent Conventional), G4 (Vip Dent Microwaves), G5 (Palaton Conventional) and G6 (Palaton Microwaves). The specimens were tested by flexural strength until fracture. Results: The test Anova and Tukey for significance level of 5% was applied and there was statistic difference among G1 (101.15±15.70) and the groups G3 (85.51±10.79) and G5 (86.00±8.49), what did not occur among G3 e G5. There was not statistic difference among the groups G2 (98.74±14.71), G4 (96.28±8.02) and G6 (92.81±11.38) and in relation to the other groups. There was not statistic difference among the polymerization techniques. Conclusion: It was concluded that the Clássico resin for the cycle of conventional polymerization has higher strength compared to the other two studied marks, and both conventional polymerization and microwaves cycle can be indicated to prosthetic use.
