Evaluation of levels of Vitamin B12 and ferritin in patients suffered from recurrent aphthous ulcers

Abstract
Hematinic deficiencies (vitamin B12, folic acid and iron), occurring singly or in combination, and with or without any underlying gastrointestinal disease, may be twice as common in people with Recurrent aphthous stomatitis or ulcers. From the literature findings there is relatively less data available on the role of vitamin-B12 and ferritin deficiencies. Hence the present study was planned to evaluate the possibility of deficiency of these nutritional values acting as etiological factors in recurrent aphthous stomatitis or ulcers. The current reviewing study was scheduled in the Department of Biochemistry in Patna Medical College from April 2018 to Aug 2018 on total 50 patients were enrolled in the present study. The 25 patients were divided in the Group A as patients suffered from the recurrent aphthous stomatitis and 25 patients were considered in the normal group as control cases. Blood samples were drawn from the study group and control group for measuring blood ferritin and vit B12 concentrations. The blood Hb and vit B12 concentrations were investigated by an auto analyser in the routine laboratory that was performed in the Department of Biochemistry Laboratory. The data generated from the above findings concludes that Patients with recurrent aphthous stomatitis or ulcers have more hematinic deficiencies, particularly vitamin B12 deficiency, compared with controls. Hence there is a need to carry out interventional studies to find out the causative relationship between RAS and haematological parameters.
