Evaluation of Oxidative Stress and Antioxidant Status in Patients with Type 2 Diabetes Mellitus and its Correlation with Glycosylated Hemoglobin
Journal Title: International Journal of Medical and Health Sciences - Year 2015, Vol 4, Issue 1
Abstract
Aim: To evaluate serum Total Antioxidant Capacity(TAC) and serum Total Peroxidase (TP) Oxidative Stress Index (OSI) and measure its correlation with Glycosylated Hemoglobin (GHM). Study design: an analytical case control study. Place and Duration of study: Department of Biochemistry, School of health and allied science, Pokhara University, between November 2012 and February 2013. Methodology: The study encompassed of 110 subjects who were distributed into two groups, 55 Type 2 Diabetic Mellitus (T2DM) and 55 healthy controls, relying on serum Fasting Blood Sugar (FBS), Post Prandial Blood Sugar (PPBS) clinical history and medication. Serum values of TAC and TP were measured; OSI was calculated and correlated with GHM. Biochemical markers (serum urea, creatinine, protein, albumin and bilirubin) were also determined in all study subjects. Results: The results showed non-significant differences in two groups with respect to age, body mass index and blood pressure (all p>0.05).Serum level of FBS, PPBS, GHB and MBG (mean blood glucose) were significantly higher in T2DM subjects (p > 0.05). Spearman’s correlation analysis in the T2DM subjects showed a statistical significant and positive correlation of FBS with OSI, PPBS with TP and GHB with OSI, TP but negative correlation of GHB with TAC and that of TP and OSI with total protein and total bilirubin while non-significant correlation with urea, and creatinine. Conclusion:T2DM subjects showed higher level of TP and OSI index and lower level of TAC with regard of decreased individual antioxidant - total protein, albumin, uric acid and total bilirubin.
