Evaluation of thyroid and prolactin levels and its correlation in patients with Infertility

Abstract

Aims and Objectives: To find out the incidence of hyperprolactinemia and hypothyroidism in infertile women and to determine the correlation between hyperprolactinemia and thyroid dysfunction in infertile women. Material: 100 infertile women attending the outdoor Department of Obstetrics &Gynaecology of Era’s Lucknow Medical College and hospital were enrolled and those fulfilling the inclusion criteria and giving consent were included in the study. Results: Out of 100 women 52 women belonged to primary infertility and 48 belonged to secondary infertility. Oligomenorrhoea was the commonest menstrual complaint in 52.6% of the women .Galactorrhea was present in only 5% of the infertile women. The incidence of hyperprolactinemia in the infertile women was 26% and the incidence of hypothyroidism was 22%. Conclusion: There is a high incidence of hyperprolactinemia in infertile women. A positive correlation was found between hypothyroidism and hyperprolactinemia. Women having hyperprolactinemia were 5.48 times as likely to suffer from hypothyroidism compared to those having normal prolactin level.
