Experimental Study on Behavior of Bitumen on Partial Replacement with Lignin

Abstract

In India, bituminous pavements are the most common pavements. So, it is important to increase the life of the bituminous pavements. Flexible pavement is often subjected to problems like rutting, cracking, and other failures due to repeated traffic loads. It has been proposed that lignin can act as a good binding material, improving the properties of bitumen. Lignin is highly available and well studied antioxidant. By partial replacement of bitumen with lignin, it can act like an antioxidant for arresting the aging of the bituminous binder. Oxidation is the primary cause of long-term aging in asphalt pavements. As a pavement oxidizes, it stiffens and eventually cracks. The use of an antioxidant as a performance enhancer in an asphalt binder could delay aging, thus increasing the life of an asphalt pavement. In this project, we used the lignin as a replacement material for bitumen in various percentages such as 5%, 10%, 15%, 20%, 25%. The behaviour of bitumen on the addition of Lignin is determined by series of tests like penetration, ductility, viscosity, softening point, it is found that the mix proportion of 10% has efficient results when compared to other proportions used. It describes the concept of using lignin as partial replacement of bitumen without losing its functionality. Not only native lignins but also modified lignins can be used for this purpose. These modifications were performed to meet original binder (bitumen) properties or to improve binder properties.
